Beta-blockers
A group of drugs that affect the activity of the nervous system by blocking certain receptors at nerve endings. Their effects include reducing heart rate and blood pressure.
 
Biofeedback
The technique of making unconscious or involuntary bodily processes, such as heartbeat or blood pressure, perceptible to the senses in order to consciously control them. This is taught to pain patients by having them observe bodily functions such as blood pressure, temperature, gastrointestinal functioning, and brain wave activity on monitors. This in turn allows them to learn by trial and error to adjust their thinking and other mental processes in order to control these involuntary bodily processes.
